Early history

Prior to the NEA’s starting, teachers received formed qualified associations with 15 personal states, nevertheless there was absolutely no cohesive country’s association working together them. In which changed with 1857 when Jones W. Valentines, president of your New York Condition Teachers Relationship, issued some sort of nation-wide invitation for you to teachers for you to unite guiding a common speech for The united state’s growing open public school procedure. The National Professors Association (NTA) came to be. Initial regular membership was in close proximity to 100.

Even though fraction educators had the ability to join a Association at all, women ended up barred coming from joining till 1866.[14] Over the producing decades the actual Association grew to become a leading tone of voice in the nationwide movement intended for women’s protection under the law. It chose its very first female leader, Ella Flagg Young, throughout 1910, a decade just before Congress given voting rights to help women.

NTA was crowned the National Training Association (NEA) inside 1870 when it amalgamated with the U . s . Normal College Association, the nation’s Association of college Superintendents, and the Core College Connections.

It was chartered by means of Congress throughout 1906

On their 100th birthday with 1957, NEA obtained over Seven hundred,000 people.

NEA-ATA merger

NEA merged theoretically with the United states Teachers Connections, the over time Black instructors association formerly founded because National Relationship of Instructors in Coloured Schools (NATCS), inside 1966. Mutual hobbies had fostered an end working romantic relationship between the 2 organizations through several ages before in which.

In 1926 each organizations made a Joint Board of people in both agencies that was given the job of studying the deficiency of accreditation associated with Black large schools, which often blocked Dark students coming from acceptance in a great many colleges and universities. At some point, the Board garnered assessment and qualification for African american high colleges. It also strongly suggested for equivalent school funding, obtained data around the status with Black schooling, and publicized fair therapy for Blacks within textbooks when pressuring publishers to take action.

Although racial segregation in public places schools had been the norm, NEA strongly suggested for adjust. In the 40s, the Relationship had declined to hold Rep Assemblies inside cities that will discriminated against team members based on kind. It received also connected to 18 Black color teacher’s organizations in suggests where Dark colored teachers have been prohibited through joining Light organizations.

Last but not least, in 1966, just after more than Twenty years of alliance, cooperation as well as planning, NEA as well as ATA agreed to the merger for the RA in San diego Beach, Fla.

NEA-AFT partnership

With 1998, a new tentative contract to unite was gotten to between NEA in addition to American Federation involving Teachers arbitrators, but ratification been unsuccessful soundly inside the NEA’s Representative Assemblage meeting within New Orleans at the begining of July 98.[22] However, a number of NEA state affiliate marketers have combined with their AFT cousins. Mergers occurred in Sarasota (the Sarasota Education Organization formed within 1998); Mn (Education Mn formed with 1998), Mt (MEA-MFT formed with 2000), in addition to New York (Nyc State Combined Teachers produced in 2005).

Further, NEA in addition to AFT continue to directly and work at common objectives through the “NEAFT Alliance.” This specific Partnership departs each firm free to are different and to carryout work on their own and at home, but makes it possible for the two groupings to team up at every degree of each business.

Recent growth

Before the Nineteen sixties, only a tiny portion of general public school educators were unionized. Although that started to change if, in 1959, Iowa became the primary state to feed a combined bargaining laws for open employees. In the next 2 decades, most other says adopted comparable laws. The actual passage these laws stood a significant have an effect on NEA, which started serve customers as a toil union, together with serving customers as a skilled association. Passing of these brand-new labor laws and regulations, along with NEA’s completely new role to be a labor marriage, helped NEA membership rights grow by 766,000 with 1961 in order to roughly 3 or more.2 million nowadays.

In the 60′s, the NEA’s age were modifying. This was because of the merging with ATA plus the decision to be a true job union, between other factors. Within 1967, your NEA elected it has the first Hispanic us president Braulio Alonso. In 1968, NEA chose its initial Black chief executive, Elizabeth Duncan Koontz.

Within 2006, the actual NEA and the AFL-CIO likewise announced this, for the first time, stand-alone NEA people as well as the ones that had combined with the AFT can be allowed to be a part of state and native labor federations attributed with the AFL-CIO.

Around 2007, within the 150th anniversary of the Argan oil founding, NEA member’s program had harvested to 3.Two million.

When Chris Brown and Rihanna dropped their remixes of “Birthday Cake” and “Turn Up the Music,” fans immediately began to weigh in on the collaborations and what they mean about the status of Ri and Brown’s highly publicized tumultuous relationship.

While the songs may serve as a distraction from their personal past (which includes Brown’s assault of Rihanna in 2009), many of the music fans we caught up with in Times Square stood on two sides of the line. Some were willing to forget the past and enjoy the music for what it is, while others were not yet ready to forgive.

“They’re both really good artists. I like Chris Brown a lot. He was down at the bottom during that time and then he came back up,” James Hauser told MTV News. “So he’s starting to do better.”

Cassy Cnegt pointed out the negative attention it could bring to both artists, rehashing a personal story line that doesn’t seem to end. “I think there’s going to be a lot of bad publicity about why she’s doing it,” she said.

Another fan, Billy Titus, added, “His music’s all right, but I think that she can do a lot better by herself than be with him.”

Jean-Yves thinks their collaborations show how far their relationship has come. “The fact that they’re able to work together is a good sign for Chris Brown, as opposed to the animosity that was there before.”

However, Aliyyah notes that it’s difficult to separate the music from the events. “Personally, I think it’s a little bit awkward for them in terms of their relationship, because he did hit her and the world knows that, so it kind of sends a weird message to her fans ? especially her women fans ? to still support him in that way, but I guess it’s not our life,” she said, adding that Brown has built up a “bad boy” reputation and that he may be trying to get Rihanna to take him back.

While music fans stand on both sides of the complex issue, one domestic violence expert tells MTV News that seeing these two artists work together again is “not surprising.”

“I don’t know what the message [of the songs] is. I would like the message to be: ‘People can change, and I will never be treated that way again and I will never treat anyone that way again.’ If they had released a song saying, ‘This is what this represents for us,’ that would be such a much more fabulous, powerful story than not saying a word,” Rita Smith, the executive director for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, said. “The content of the songs seems to be more in-your-face than something about, ‘We’re collaborating on something because we care about the way people treat each other.’ That would have been the message that would have been nice to come out of this very public and tragic incident.”

Some artists, like Adele, release albums that are pure Grammy catnip thanks to instant-classic sounds that resonate with the Recording Academy’s way-back contingent. Then there’s Lady Gaga.

She’s been a bridesmaid twice for Album of the Year at the Grammys, losing out on her first two releases. But with her third bid on Sunday, for Born This Way, Gaga appears to have made the kind of career-defining, big-idea album that Grammy voters could not deny.

It had all the things the Academy loves in an Album of the Year nominee: ambition, deeply personal tracks that provide a glimpse at the artist’s psyche, bold musical explorations, strong sales and chance to prove that they’re hip enough to get what the kids are listening to. (Or, in some cases, a new album by Steely Dan.)

And, indeed, BTW did have it all, from the jackhammer electronica of “Marry the Night” to the tango-lite grooves of “Americano,” the techno attack of “Heavy Metal Lover,” hints of biography in “Hair,” the lighter-raising ballads in “Yoü and I” and “The Edge of Glory” and, of course, the title track, which served as both a dance-floor phenomenon and an empowerment anthem for the ages.

The album, one of the most anticipated of 2011, not only crashed the charts with stellar sales figures of more than one million in its first week, but it also managed to once again bend the will of the music-buying public to meet her quirky, unpredictable muse. Gaga promised her fans that she was pouring everything she had into the disc and when it arrived, complete with a series of trippy, provocative videos that also pushed the envelope, they couldn’t have asked for any more from their Mother Monster.

Frequent musical collaborator producer Fernando Garibay said the recognition from the Recording Academy was a nice cherry-topper to a year of hard, hard work. “We worked on this album for so long and it was like our baby so it was more about if the fans would love it; that was the most important thing.,” he told MTV News. “But of course, nominations, yeah, that’s cool.”

The first full-length effort from Gaga since her rise to international stardom, Born This Way allowed the singer to exorcise some demons, comment on her newfound fame and, of course, create the kind of over-the-top tracks that would lend themselves to equally eye-popping live performance.

“This album was the most personal, the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion and emotion from her and the team,” Garibay said. “We all followed her lead on this, on every song … how intense every avenue of making this record was for us, protecting the record, creative, conceptually, every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme.”

The video for the title track took the Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. In a year in which she kept turning heads with ever-more-insane red carpet walks, Gaga fittingly raised the bar further at the show, where she performed and accepted the Female Video Moonman as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone. In between those appearances, Gaga also managed to circle the globe with the Broadway-worthy Monster Ball Tour, on which she brought the new songs to life every night in a spectacle that was the visual equal of her studio experiments.

Though she worked with her core team, which includes Garibay, producer RedOne and DJ White Shadow, Gaga also opened the doors to collaborations with late Bruce Springsteen saxophonist Clarence Clemons and classic rock producer Robert “Mutt” Lange and Queen guitarist Brian May, who helped give “Yoü and I” its epic, AM radio majesty.

Gaga was so excited to record the album that she insisted on having a portable studio with her at all times to work on new music even as she toured the world for The Fame Monster, RedOne said. The road work paid off, as the album has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, spinning off a bevy of hits, including the title track, “Marry the Night,” “Judas,” “Yoü and I” and “The Edge of Glory.”

And though he’s been there before, RedOne added that getting another nod for the biggest Grammy honor of all is new every time. “It’s an amazing thing to be nominated for the biggest thing in music industry,” he said. “It’s always a big honor. I get happy and I never want to get used to it.”

What’s the point of getting all dolled up for the Grammy Awards if no one notices your outfit? Since not everyone can earn a nomination or score a performance slot, sometimes you have to make your own news by crashing the red carpet with an eye-popping outfit that is sure to get tongues wagging.

It’s anyone’s guess what this year’s attendees will be wearing on Sunday night at the 54th annual awards show, but MTV News will be camped out on the carpet for a full three hours before the festivities kick off and we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for all the outrageous looks and fashions.

Click for photos of our most-shocking Grammy red carpet moments!

In the meantime, we thought it was worth a look back at some of the legendary entrances from Grammys past:

Lady Gaga egg: Sure, Justin Bieber toted his pet snake to last year’s show, but it was, of course, Lady Gaga who turned the most heads by getting carried down the carpet in a giant, see-through egg that she incubated in before emerging later in the night for her performance of “Born This Way.”

Britney gets bodied: Britney Spears has long prided herself on wearing what she wants, when she wants. But someone should have pulled her aside in 2010 before she exited the car in an oddball Dolce & Gabbana bodysuit overlaid with a lace dress that turned heads for all the wrong reasons.

M.I.A.’s pregnancy chic: With her middle finger firmly tucked into place, the rapper/singer made her way into the 2009 show while nine-months pregnant in a cartoony, ruffled blue maternity dress and matching sneakers.

Coldplay play dress up: It was kind of cool when Coldplay stuck with their bold Sgt. Pepper’s-style suits for the whole Viva La Vida tour. But when they wore them to the 2009 show, it just felt … silly.

OK Go … back to the drawing board: Viral icons OK Go are experts at drawing attention to their music with trippy, how-did-they-do-that videos. They drew mostly sniggers, though, when they donned matching brocade curtain-looking red-and-gold suits to the 2007 show. Their smartest move may have been to cover their faces with red cloth.

R. Kelly, man of mystery: Kels has made a career out of being inscrutable , but his bold sartorial choice at the 2004 Grammys was, well, weird. From the neck down he wore an elegant three-button black suit and tie, but the matching Robin mask? Who knows?

Alicia Keys gets funky: Nobody really knows what Keys was thinking in 2002 when she walked the carpet wearing embroidered jeans, sandals, a white tank and a sheer green sari-like shift with a built in, bedazzled headdress.

Toni Braxton lets it all hang out: Sometimes it’s what you don’t wear that gets attention. In 2001, singer Braxton sported a barely-there white “dress” that hardly covered her assets with strips of material that dangled in the front and back.

Jennifer Lopez’s plunging neckline: Way before she was an “American Idol” judge, Lopez sent hearts racing in 2000 with her instantly infamous plunging neckline Versace gown.

Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss our Grammy red-carpet live stream this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And the fun doesn’t end Sunday: MTV News has you covered for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion, Grammy winners and Grammy news until the hangover wears off!

Michael Fassbender is using his newfound fame to develop a film about an Irish legend close to his heart. Meanwhile, Rob Corddry joins Michael Bay’s “Pain and Gain,” Nonso Anozie will play “Ender’s Game” and Kyle Chandler is the latest to hunt Osama Bin Laden with Kathryn Bigelow.

It’s February 21, and this is today’s casting call.

Michael Fassbender Plans Movie About Cuchulainn
Despite his recent Oscar snub, Michael Fassbender is one of the biggest actors to blow up on the Hollywood scene this year. That’s likely why he’s taking advantage of that popularity to develop a project for himself. Variety is reporting that Fassbender and “Public Enemies” scribe Ronan Bennett are working on a movie about the Irish myth Cuchulainn.

Two More To Michael Bay’s “Pain And Gain”?
Variety has the news that funnyman Rob Corddry is the latest actor to join Michael Bay’s next project, “Pain and Gain.” He’ll be joining Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Ed Harris in the film. Corddry will play John Mese, a former competitive body builder who is Wahlberg’s boss at a gym. Meanwhile, Latino Review is reporting that John Turturro is also in talks to join the flick.

Nonso Anozie Plays “Ender’s Game”
Three more stars have joined the cast of “Ender’s Game.” Deadline is reporting that “The Grey” star Nonso Anozie will play Sergeant Dap. In addition, Stevie Ray Dallimore will play Ender’s father and Andrea Powell will play his mother. The film is set to hit theaters on March 15, 2013.

Kyle Chandler Will Hunt Bin Laden
“Friday Night Lights” star Kyle Chandler is the latest actor to join Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled movie about the hunt to find Osama Bin Laden. Deadline reports that he joins a cast that also includes Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Edgar Ramirez and Mark Strong. The flick is due to hit theaters on December 19.

Jim Caviezel Joins “The Tomb”
“The Tomb” just gained another major player. Producer Mark Canton told The Matthew Aaron Show (via Collider) that Jim Caviezel has joined Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in the film. Apparently Caviezel will play the warden at the prison that the action duo escape from, and will be the antagonist of the film.

In Casting Call, the MTV Movies team rounds up the day’s biggest casting news and offers it up to you on a silver platter. If you’re looking to see which movie your favorite actor has booked next, look no further. Tell us what you think in the comments section and on Twitter!

I was daydreaming at the office one recent afternoon when I started to notice all the “Star Wars” stuff I?ve got at my desk. Alongside representations of John McClane, Mal Reynolds and Kevin Costner as Robin Hood are: three Yodas (cute plush Yoda, figurine Yoda and Magic 8 Ball-type Yoda), one talking Yoda keychain, three flash drives (my favorite being the Han Solo which sleeps in a little ?carbonite? case), one Ewok action figure (Wicket, I think), two different types of lightsaber, one Darth Vader talking pen that neither talks nor writes anymore and a 2012 mini calendar. At home I have a set of Star Wars linens from Pottery Barn.

The way I see it, there are three types of people who buy Star Wars stuff nowadays: There?s the obliging parent whose kid drags her through the aisles of Toys R Us so they can pick out a trinket from “The Clone Wars,” the hardcore collector who spends most of his waking hours searching for That One Piece that might cost him much more than a week?s paycheck, and me ? just a regular Star Wars fan who fondly remembers all the cool toys Mom and Dad threw away ages ago.

The first group shows up in force when there?s a new movie release or another cable TV season starts. The second and third groups fill the gap in between. Together we?ve spent $20 billion on “Star Wars” related merchandise since the franchise began, and there are no signs of slowing down.

According to Philip Wise of Rebelscum.com, the “Star Wars” collecting news site is busier than it?s ever been. ?[The collectors] are all talking about what they got last week, what they?re getting today, what?s the value, what should I expect to pay for this,? Wise said. ?And I see these transactions people talk about ? tens of thousands of dollars.?

It all began back in 1977 with the release of the first film. ?People wanted stuff from that movie from the start,? said Daniel Pickett of ActionFigureInsider.com. Pickett related the merchandising origin story that has become a well-known part of Star Wars lore: ?The movie opened, every toy company had passed on it, with the exception of Kenner, which primarily had done a lot of board games and stuff.?

Kenner wasn?t prepared for the overwhelming demand. ?When kids went out looking for the figures, none existed,? Pickett explained. ?They literally sold a box with a certificate in it, saying, ?We?re going to make figures and when we do, we?ll mail them to you.? And so that?s what kids opened on Christmas morning in 1977.?

Thirty-five years later, Lucasfilm is still providing collectors new and exciting items to drool over. ?They keep releasing new stuff,? said Pickett. ?That one cantina band member or someone from Jabba?s palace or Imperial Soldier #13 — and then they keep improving on all the main cast too. So [a collection] just never feels complete.?

Those poor people, always searching, yearning, coveting, never getting a moment?s rest. I?m glad I?m not one of them. I?m happy with my desk ornaments and retro linens and comfy Darth Vader t-shirts and Wookiee cookie cookbooks.

OK, there is just one more thing I want…

In The Comlink, “Star Wars” fan and MTV News producer Tami Katzoff explores the glory days of a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Whether you’re Team Jedi or Team Sith, friend of Wookiees or wanted by bounty hunters, any and all “Star Wars” fans are welcome along for the ride.

Add Moreau to the mix, and you’re looking at some of “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” actor Idris Elba’s most recognizable roles to date. Indeed, Elba’s true passion may very well lie in the realm of fitness instruction… particularly when it involves whipping journalists into superhero shape.

Elba did exactly that in the latest edition of After Hours, turning MTV Movies reporter Josh Horowitz into… well, we don’t want to spoil the surprise. Exercise your own capacity for fitness in this instructional video with Elba and Horowitz below.

When Rihanna and Chris Brown dropped not one, but two tracks together Monday night, the songs were met with mixed reactions. Some fans thought it was time for everyone to move on and embrace the former couple’s next chapter, while others argued that given Brown’s 2009 assault on Rihanna, it was inappropriate for them to record together.

In the years since that assault, Rihanna has been open about her abusive relationship with the R&B singer, saying, “I don’t want to be the big domestic-violence spokesperson, because that doesn’t define who I am. But if I can help young women in any way, and that being one of the things they need help with, then I’ll do that.”

Since that late 2009 interview with MTV News, Rihanna certainly hasn’t backed down in her career, releasing chart-topping singles, winning awards, going on tour and using videos and Twitter to show the world just how fierce she can be.

After the release of the “Birthday Cake” and “Turn Up the Music” remixes, Rita Smith, the executive director for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, talked to MTV News about what the collaborations mean.

“I guess I’m not particularly surprised given the rumors that had gone on around this, and it’s also not surprising because many victims get back with their abusers, even after an assault. They love them, they think they change, and abusers are particularly good at convincing you they’ve changed,” she said. “I don’t know what their relationship is at this point, but I’m not surprised that she’s staying connected.

“I’m still concerned because his reaction to people’s criticism of him being on the Grammys was fairly belligerent, and that didn’t give me much of a message or sense of hope that he had made changes since that assault,” she said, referring to the barrage of tweets Brown sent out after negative feedback about his Grammy appearance.

“I hope he’s changed. I hope that he will never choose to use violence again no matter what kind of relationship he has with her or anybody else,” she continued. “I think, for me, it would be much more powerful if they could publicly state what’s different for them so that it doesn’t just leave us wondering if anything has changed and if they have learned anything in the process, because it was so public. We’re all wondering, because they’re not saying anything. That would leave us with a different message that it all doesn’t matter and they’re just going to do what they do.”

Smith said that, given their history, “I think the message she’s sending is that the feelings of being in love are more important than your personal safety.”

“The thing that matters most is whether you’re safe and whether you feel respected ? that’s what matters most in a relationship and that’s what we should all be focusing on,” Smith added. “That has to be the primary goal of any relationship.”

In the end, Smith hopes the two pop stars have grown since the very public assault.

“I don’t know what the message is. I would like the message to be: People can change, and I will never be treated that way again and I will never treat anyone that way again. If they had released a song saying this is what this represents for us, that would be such a much more fabulous, powerful story than not saying a word,” she said. “The content of the songs seems to be more in-your-face than something about, ‘We’re collaborating on something because we care about the way people treat each other.’ That would have been the message that would have been nice to come out of this very public and tragic incident.”

What do you think of Chris Brown and Rihanna working together in light of their history? Sound off in the comments.

Fellow British artist Jessie J shined on her first Grammy red carpet, turning heads in a gray Julien Macdonald gown. “I just wanted to wear something that I don’t usually wear, which is silver, something long and very heavy,” Jessie told MTV News. “I feel like a disco ball at the event.”

Katy Perry was feeling blue at the Grammys, matching her blue hairstyle to a light-blue, long-sleeved Elie Saab gown. “One of my absolute favorites of the night was Katy Perry,” Celebuzz producer Rachel Maresca told MTV News. “She paired her bold, blue hair with a very light-blue Elie Saab lace gown. She looked stunning, and it’s a more subdued look for her. We don’t always see that out of her, but it is very glamorous.”

Another statement dress belonged to Fergie, who called her Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown her “safe choice,” which it was far from. The vibrant orange lace gown allowed her black bra and panties to see through, but according to Fergie, when Gaultier gives you a custom look, you have to wear it.

“When Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown comes and it’s shipped to you and it fits, you wear it,” Fergie told our own Sway Calloway.

Yet, out of all these amazing artists, it seems the fashion night belonged to Rihanna. Jaws dropped as she worked the carpet in a one-of-a-kind Armani dress that she helped design. With a plunging neckline and a deep halter, this dress hugged every curve to perfection.
